Chamber Music Connects the World ¦ Application for young artists
Chamber Music Connects the World has taken the idea of Rudolf Serkin, who many years ago set up a summer school in Marlboro, and reworked it to become a highly acclaimed project that is the only one of its kind in Europe. It gives exceptionally talented young musicians the chance to play in chamber music ensembles with some of the great instrumentalists on the international music scene.
It also broadens the traditional teacher-pupil relationship in that they work on pieces by playing them together. Playing together in concerts is the highlight of this formative experience for the participants. Through their personal involvement as “Seniors” in this project, great musicians, such as Yuri Bashmet and Gidon Kremer, support Kronberg Academy in its aim to educate and provide a sound promotional platform for a new generation of chamber musicians.
Our next Chamber Music Connects the World will be held from 9 to 19 May 2010.
Application for young artists
Applications are invited from young violinists, viola players and cellists who were born in 1982 or later. Application must be made in writing by 4 January 2010 at the latest. The following documents must be enclosed with the application form:

Selection of applicants and auditions
The applicants will be selected first on the basis of the recordings and documentation submitted. Therefore please ensure that you provide a good quality recording! Only a few applicants who are placed on the shortlist will then be invited to take part in live auditions. Applicants who are invited to the auditions will be contacted by 1 February 2010 at the latest.
The auditions will be held on 22 February 2010 in Kronberg im Taunus. The members of the jury will be Yuri Bashmet, Gidon Kremer and Raimund Trenkler (Artistic Director of Kronberg Academy).
Applicants will play chamber music works with members of the Kuss Quartet. They will be sent information about the works to be played with the invitation to the audition.
Accommodation
Juniors will be given a fixed daily allowance for the duration of their stay. The allowance is intended to cover the cost of board and accommodation. Kronberg Academy will arrange private accommodation in Kronberg for the length of the project. On request, however, we will be pleased to send you a list of hotels and guest houses. (Please note that the cost of hotel accommodation must be borne by the applicant.)
The works
During the preparation phase of Chamber Music Connects the World some 15 chamber music works for strings – from trios to octets – will be explored. The following pieces (and others) will be played:
Ludwig van Beethoven: String quartet No 14 in C sharp minor Op. 131
Gustav Mahler: Piano quartet in A minor
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Piano sextet in D major Op. 110
Franz Schubert: Piano quintet in A major “The trout” D 667
Carl Vine: String quintet
The art of instrumentation – a tribute to Glenn Gould and Johann Sebastian Bach
This year’s Juniors will also be taking part in a special project initiated by Gidon Kremer to mark the tenth anniversary of Chamber Music Connects the World. Ten contemporary composers (including Giya Kancheli, Alexander Raskatov, Stevan Kovacs Tickmayer, Raminta Serksnyte, Georgs Pelecis, Carl Vine and Leonid Desyatnikov) are composing new arrangements of ten piano works by Johann Sebastian Bach from Glenn Gould’s repertoire for string ensembles. The ten works will be rehearsed and performed by the ensembles during Chamber Music Connects the World.
The ensembles
An appropriate number of ensembles will be formed to perform the 15 or so chamber music works. Each ensemble will include one Senior as a teacher and chamber music partner. Each Senior will be in charge of several ensembles. The intention is for each Junior to have the opportunity to play chamber music with at least two of the teachers and will therefore be assigned to the appropriate number of ensembles.
Juniors will be allocated to the different chamber music ensembles and works on the basis of the auditions (see above) and their applications. The decision will be taken by the Director of Kronberg Academy in consultation with the teachers. It may be possible to take account of requests to work with specific chamber music partners or to play specific pieces. Juniors will be informed no later than 9 March 2010 about the ensembles in which they will be playing and will be sent copies of the music.
Procedure
Rehearsal phase
The ensembles follow a fixed programme of rehearsals, which should give each Junior the opportunity to play in ensembles alongside three Seniors. Rehearsals for the chamber music ensembles will generally take place in the afternoon.
Concerts 15 – 19 May 2010
Chamber Music Connects the World will culminate in five concerts in Kronberg, in which all ensembles will perform.
Chamber Music Connects the World – a Kronberg Academy project, supported by the Crespo Foundation.
