At the end of May nine talented young musicians aged between 13 and 19 years from Germany and Austria came to Kronberg for our chamber music workshop Mit Musik – Miteinander (Making Music Together).

Twice a year, as part of an initiative by the Crespo Foundation, young musicians who have won a first prize in Germany’s young musician competition, “Jugend musiziert” or the Austrian “Prima la Musica” have the chance to play together with the teachers who were “Juniors” in the Chamber Music Connects the World project.

This year the young tutors were Bracha Malkin (violin) from New York, Marie-Elisabeth Hecker (violoncello), young soloist on the Kronberg Academy Master courses and Martin Helmchen (piano). The responsible job of the organisation has been taken by the trainees of the Kronberg Academy like me and Ingrid Scheuermann. During the rehearsal time we got the opportunity to talk with Bracha Malkin about her stay in Kronberg and her impressions of “Mit Musik – Miteinander”.

1. Is it the first time that you give lessons in chamber music?
This is not the first time that I have given lessons in chamber music.

2. How did you prepare for “Mit Musik – Miteinander”?
To prepare for Mit Musik – Miteinander, I chose repertoire which I thought would be beneficial for learning specific skills related to chamber music and also, just for the enjoyment of the players.

3. How did you become teacher at “Mit Musik – Miteinander”?
To become a teacher at Mit Musik-Miteinander, I was first a junior at Chamber Music Connects the World last June in Kronberg where I had the privilege to learn from the great artists of today who encompass solo, chamber and teaching careers. After this experience, I was invited to participate in Mit Musik – Miteinander.

4. At “Chamber Music Connects the World” you were student and this time you take up the opposite position of a teacher. How do you feel this reversal of roles?
The reversal of the roles junior/teacher is an amazing experience. I felt very honoured to hopefully pass on some tradition and information to new young musicians. The role reversal felt natural and I felt a big responsibility to share ideas on how to prepare young musicians for the joy of music-making.

5. What can you tell us about the students you were teaching to? In which way do the students improve their playing? Do they make progress?

The students that participated were wonderful. They were enthusiastic, eager to dive into the techniques and music-making aspects of the music. They were focused and improved a great deal from the beginning of the rehearsal to the end. Each day was like a totally new group, which had been working for many hours together. By the finale, they were united for the music and what an exciting concert they all performed.

6. How do you feel if you play together with the students?
I enjoyed playing with the students very much because of their desire to achieve the best results. It is inspirational to find students who participate for the sole reason to learn and create music.

7. How would you describe the atmosphere during “Mit Musik – Miteinander”? Did you enjoy the time? Why?
The atmosphere at Mit Musik – Miteinander is fantastic. Friendly, conducive for work, everyone is taken good care of and most importantly it was fun for each of us. We were all placed in a setting where music comes first and what a place and institution to be inspired from. Such wonderful artists spend their time in Kronberg and share their wealth of knowledge with many young up and coming artists and I feel privileged to have been asked to participate in Mit Musik – Miteinander.

Vom 22. bis 24. Mai 2009 fand unser Kammermusikprojekt Mit Musik – Miteinander statt.  Zehn hochbegabte junge Musikerinnen und Musiker aus Deutschland und Österreich – Bundespreisträger des Wettbewerbs „Jugend musiziert” und des österreichischen Pendants „Prima la Musica” – hatten die Gelegenheit, unter Anleitung von der Geigerin Bracha Malkin, dem Pianist Martin Helmchen und der Cellistin Marie-Elisabeth Hecker Kammermusikwerke einzustudieren.

Vom 22. bis 24. Mai 2009 veranstalten wir wieder das Kammermusikprojekt Mit Musik – Miteinander (MMM), das sich an musikalisch begabte Jugendliche richtet.

Vorbild für Mit Musik – Miteinander ist das Kammermusikprojekt „Chamber Music Connects the World”, das wir erdacht haben und das von der Crespo Foundation getragen wird: junge Künstler (Juniors) im Alter zwischen 19 und 29 Jahren, die zu den Besten ihrer Generation gehören, haben in Kronberg alle zwei Jahre die Gelegenheit, als Juniors gemeinsam mit Seniors, den großen Künstlern unserer Zeit wie Gidon Kremer, Yuri Bashmet und dem Beaux Arts Trio, gemeinsam kammermusikalische Werke zu erarbeiten.

Bei MMM werden nun drei dieser „Juniors” selbst zu „Seniors”, geben ihr Wissen und ihre Erfahrungen weiter und musizieren von Freitagnachmittag bis Sonntagabend mit den Jüngeren. Die „Seniors” sind gefragte Kammermusiker oder Mitglieder in renommierten Orchestern und verfolgen im In- und Ausland eine rege Konzerttätigkeit. Als Dozenten werden im Frühjahr diesen Jahres Marie-Elisabeth Hecker (Violoncello),  Martin Helmchen (Klavier) und Bracha Malkin (Violine) nach Kronberg kommen.

MMM ist eine Art Workshop, bei dem mehrere kammermusikalische Werke, meist Quartette, Quintette und Sextette, in öffentlichen Proben erarbeitet werden. Somit haben die Jugendlichen die Möglichkeit intensive Gespräche mit den Dozenten zu führen, Fragen zu stellen und in die Proben einzubringen. Die Werke werden von den Dozenten in Absprache mit der Kronberg Academy ausgewählt und mindestens drei Wochen vor Beginn des Projektes an die Teilnehmer versandt. In der Regel ist jeder Teilnehmer an mindestens zwei Werken aktiv beteiligt.

Mit Musik – Miteinander wird ebenso wie „Chamber Music Connects the World” von der Crespo Foundation finanziert und findet zwei Mal jährlich in Kronberg statt. Außerdem besteht eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem Deutschen Musikrat.
