Cello Masterclasses / A teacher who loves stress

Mittwoch, 12. September 2012

What a busy day this was!

The morning kicked-off with a couple of  preparational work items for a planned film session. This session was  scheduled for the early afternoon hours,  where I was supposed to assist our partner Friedemann Grüning for a short interview with Maestro David Geringas.

In order to condition myself with the right feelings and thoughts I attended two masterclasses with this famous Lithuanian cellist, conductor and teacher. When the masterclass sessions were finished I quickly grabbed some food and was running to the Recepturhof building where the interview was about to happen. Lighntning and audio conditions were fine-tuned, so the interview could run smoothly . Which it did.

Satisfied with the results of that 20-minute interview I then handed the room over to Yuka Kobayashi, the Japanese pianist who urgently wanted to rehearse. After that, my next activity was to attend the last masterclass sessions of the day with German cellist  Jens Peter Maintz at Kronberg´s Streitkirche.

Now, here comes an  example of a truly busy man. For someone like Jens Peter Maintz the end of the day comes near only when the midnight hour approaches. This seems to be the rule for him, being one of our four cello teachers.  The last 3 students of his afternoon masterclass (which started in the morning) confronted him with works by Shostakovich and Ligeti. Heavy stuff, I thought!  Being asked about how he is coping with this whole workload throughout the entire day he simply answered „ I love stress“. And there seemed to be no irony in his answer.

After the last student left the room at around 7 pm, Jens Peter kindly explained what the remaining activities of the day would be: a little rest, then attending the concert with Frans Helmerson and Mihaela Martin at 8 pm, followed by just another very important activity of the day, which is rehearsing until midnight. In order to prepare for his own concert the next day. Still fresh-looking Jens Peter, who was studying with David Geringas in Lübeck, delivered his answers happily. Amazing!

No doubt, this teacher and cello virtuoso is full of energy. Now I know, what a busy schedule really looks like.

Anyway, we look forward to his concert tomorrow evening.
