Dienstag, 9. Juni 2009
The Pierre Fournier Award 2009 has been awarded to 20 year old Kronberg Academy Master cellist, Gabriel Schwabe, following the final round of auditions at the Wigmore Hall, London, on Friday, 5 June 2009. Gabriel, together with the pianist Anna Naretto, performed a programme of Mendelssohn, Bloch and Schnittke in front of a distinguished panel of judges comprising: Ralph Kirshbaum, founder of the Pierre Fournier Award, cellists Colin Carr, Karine Georgian, Alice Neary, Raphael Wallfisch and Moray Welsh, and Jonathan Groves, a director of the artist management agency Ingpen & Williams.
Gabriel was the youngest of just 5 cellists selected from the first round of auditions, which involved 18 musicians from eleven countries across the world. As the recipient of the Pierre Fournier Award he will receive a recital in London’s Wigmore Hall, a professional CD recording of this recital, as well as other significant orchestral and chamber music performances with affiliated organisations such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra and Oxford May Music.
German-born Gabriel is currently completing the second year of his Kronberg Academy Master degree in International Solo Performance, studying the Cello with Professor Frans Helmerson.
It was a thrilling moment when it was announced that Gabriel had won the Pierre Fournier Award 2009. All the members of the jury are musicians with prominent careers as solo cellists and for Gabriel to receive acclamation and endorsement for his music making and cellistic skills from such an audience is a fantastic achievement.
Ralph Kirshbaum founded the Award in 1986 in memory of the great cellist, Pierre Fournier, with the aim of assisting exceptional talent in young players. The award takes place every three years.
